Skilling for Recovery - Community Services Skills Set

This course is offered under the NSW Government's Skilling for Recovery initiative. This initiative offers fee-free and low-fee training options to eligible students to boost skills development across full and part qualifications. The aim of this program is to support Australia's economic recovery through the development of workforce skills that businesses need to sustain our economic development.


This Community Services Skill Set will help prepare you to take on a caring role, responding professionally to provide individual support in a range of Community Services contexts.


CHCCCS016 Respond to client needs

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to respond holistically to client needs. Clients may have a range of issues outside and in addition to the area of immediate focus or expertise of the worker and their organisation. The unit applies to workers in a range of community services contexts who provide person-centred support to clients.

Students will learn to establish an interpersonal relationship with the client, identify the range of issues impacting on the client, analyse information to determine a course of action, and refer the client to other services to provide additional support.


CHCCOM001 Provide first point of contact

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to greet clients and exchange routine information, to prioritise the individual’s needs, and to respond to immediate needs. This unit applies to service delivery in all community services and health contexts. Workers at this level work under supervision with limited responsibility.

Students will learn to greet and observe people, follow organisational procedures to collect routine client information, identify priority of need, and provide service information.


CHCCOM005 Communicate and work in health or community services

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, management and other industry providers. This unit applies to a range of health and community service contexts where workers may communicate face-to-face, in writing or using digital media and work with limited responsibility under direct or indirect supervision.

Students will learn to communicate effectively with people, collaborate with colleagues, address constraints to communication, and report problems to a supervisor.


CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work respectfully with people from diverse social and cultural groups and situations, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. This unit applies to all workers.

Students will learn to reflect on own perspectives, appreciate diversity and inclusiveness and their benefits, communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and situations, and promote understanding across diverse groups.


This training is delivered by Community College Northern Inland Inc. RTO 90027. On successful completion of the training program, the nationally recognised Statements of Attainment CHCCCS016 Respond to client needs, CHCCOM001 Provide first point of contact, CHCCOM005 Communicate and work in health or community services, and CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people will be issued to students assessed as competent by Community College Northern Inland.


Assessments are made against units of competency from the Course in SG00007500 - Skilling for Recovery Initiative - Redeployment & Youth SG00007500.
