Working Under Powerlines

In this course participants will learn how to ensure safety when using plant and/or machinery near overhead powerlines or underground services.

In order to manage the hazards associated with working in proximity to powerlines, there are clearance distances around powerlines that apply. It is important to take these distances into account when designing structures or planning to work near powerlines as it may affect the work practices or the use of equipment or structures such as scaffolding.

Damage to underground assets such as electric cables, gas, water and sewage pipes caused by excavation work can result in serious or potentially fatal incidents including burns, electric shock and gas releases or explosions as well as disrupting the electricity, gas or water supply. Incidents may also arise when damage to these assets is left unreported and unrepaired.

Units of Competency

• UETTDREL14 Working safely near live electrical apparatus as a non-electrical worker

This unit covers compliance with working safely up to the defined safe approach distance (SAD) near energised electrical apparatus, including electrical powerlines, for non-electrical workers. It includes work functions that may be performed, such as vegetation control, scaffolding, rigging, painting and/or any other activity that requires working safely and complying with requirements and/or established procedures near live electrical apparatus by a non-electrical worker.

• RIICCM202E Identify, locate and protect underground services

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify, locate and protect underground services in civil construction. It applies to those working in operational roles and overseeing construction work. They generally work under supervision and hold some responsibility for identifying, locating and protecting underground services.

• Pre-requisites You must show 100 points of ID upon enrolment and bring the same ID on the day of the course, including photo ID to be sighted by the trainer. Students need to wear long pants, long shirt and enclosed shoes to the course.

  This training will be delivered and assessed by Coates Hospitality Services, trading as Australian Training & Consulting (ATAC) RTO 90886. On successful completion of the training program, the nationally recognised Statements of Attainment UETTDREL14 Working safely near live electrical apparatus as a non-electrical worker, and RIICCM202E Identify, locate and protect underground services will be issued to students assessed as competent by ATAC.

  
  

  Need a Refresher?

  If you wish to do the stand-alone Refresher course, you must provide transcripts of your previous qualifications to ensure that have not expired. If you are unable to provide evidence of your previous qualifications, or if they are older than 12 months, you will need to complete the New Entrant two-day training course.
